‘I enjoy working experimentally combining methods to create visually appealing and stimulating pieces.’
After graduating in Visual Arts at Salford University in 2006 she took a gap year. Cheryl lived and worked in Australia for seven months continually building on skills and experiences as an artist. Most recently she was an Artist in Resident at Salford University on a National Scheme AA2A. Today Cheryl continues to creating illustrations and complete commissions alongside working with Leftfield on projects, including developing bespoke wallpaper.
The juxtaposition of these different forms allows for a comparison into what each form represents; the traditional crafts usually represent individual, disciplined work, and more contemporary methods could be associated with consumerism and mass production. ‘I question the demise of the traditional craft techniques and try to celebrate them producing personal and imaginative work, combining old and new.’
The work contrasts pattern, print and has been influenced by fashion designers such as Christain LaCroix and Marimekko whose creative and inventive work often uses detail and ornamentation.
She set up her company Sweet and Crunchie in 2008 and works in collaboration with the community creating, using knitting, embroidery, needle art and print to promote traditional crafts.
